The Black Lives Matter movement is also about elevating and recognising people of color, diversifying our references, and genuinely listening and learning from all the different ethnicities that live in the world. Quoting one of our favourite influencers Steven Onoja, "Being colored means that we are vibrant, bold and rich. Imagine how dull and one dimensional a world without color would be". We couldn’t agree more! That’s why we are sharing some of our favourite cultural creators. Let's dive into what makes these creators amazing and why you should follow them ASAP!

Nupol Kiazolu

The 19-year-old Nupol is an activist and the president of the Youth Coalition of Black Lives Matter of Greater New York (@blmgreaterny). She is among the creators who took over Demi Lovato’s Instagram account during the recent BLM movement. She plans to be president in 2036 and change how we think about racism along the way. She is part of Teen Vogue’s 21 Under 21 class of 2018, which spotlights extraordinary young women, girls, and femmes making waves in their industries or passions of choice. And did we mention she is also Miss Liberia USA?

Alicia Garza

Alicia is an American civil rights activist and writer known for co-founding the international Black Lives Matter movement, once a hashtag, now a national organisation and a global rights movement. She has organised around the issues of health, student services and rights, rights for domestic workers, ending police brutality, anti-racism, and violence against transgender and gender non-conforming people of colour, and she is among the voices who took over Selena Gomez’s Instagram during the BLM movement.

 Luis Jonathan Hernandez is an activist and community organiser. He is the founder of the advocacy group Youth Over Guns, which empowers youth in marginalised communities and encourage legislative advocacy to prevent gun violence. Winter BreeAnne is an unstoppable 19-year-old advocate who has started her own nonprofit, become a youth ambassador for TOMS, and even been named one of Riverside, California’s Most Remarkable Teens. Labeled a budding activist, Winter says she’s just doing her civic duty. She wants to make a difference in the world and is using her voice to do so. Just like Nupol, Winter BreeAnne is part of Teen Vogue’s 21 Under 21 class of 2018.

Lee is a lifestyle influencer actively voicing her opinion and knowledge on the BLM movement. She not only shares highly aesthetic photos, showcasing her amazing style, but also her everyday experiences as a black woman. DeRay Mckesson

DeRay is a 34-year-old activist from Baltimore, US. He began his career as a teacher but then decided to change his occupation, and started launching civil rights campaigns. In 2017 he also became a host in “Pod Save the People” political podcast. DeRay Mckesson is one of the organisers and supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement. To communicate his experience, DeRay wrote a book ‘On the Other Side of Freedom: The Case for Hope’ where he, among others, highlighted his experience of taking part in the BLM organisation.

Jamal Trulove

Jamal Trulove is an activist best known for starring in ‘The Last Black Man in San Francisco’ as a supporting actor. Jamal also received widespread notoriety when he was wrongly accused by policemen in his friend’s murder back in 2007. Jamal was sentenced for 6 years in maximum-security prisons. Only in 2015 when it was confirmed by the retrial that the evidence was fabricated, Jamal Trulove was finally exonerated. After being released, Jamal is dedicating all of his time to fighting for freedom and justice. He is currently working on 2 documentaries and actively engages himself in protests such as the BLM movement.
